Clip art, as its name suggests, is a form of graphic art that makes use of pre-existing images. These drawings / images are either copied or physically cut from existing works in the printed format on a particular topic. The sources of these pictures are either books that have entered the public domain or books specifically published for such use. Logos, mascots, identity and business cards, invitations, letterheads, etc., can be made by cutting or copying the images. Clip art facilitates the availability of a pool of generic art that can be used and reused by non-artists. Adding elements to clipart can also produce pleasing results. Yes, many think that branding is only important in fast food and retail operations, but it's extremely important to colleges that have to compete for student tuitions; and it's even gaining importance among high schools, and their surrounding communities, that are vying for prestige to boost neighborhood reputations/value. More successful high schools are now recruiting star athletes and students with high academic achievements, and the school's reputation can either help or hurt those efforts. Your friend usually doesn't take advantage of you. If he did, you'd probably drop-kick his game console during the night or something (he might be your roommate, after all). That at least keeps him on his toes-or the edge of his rolling office seat-but he still lets your work slide behind the other work. He comes in first, his customers second, and you, his friend, come in third. You might think that free clipart is a cop-out. If you have the graphic design friend, after all, he can probably get you some pretty sweet free graphics (or design them at least for cheap). We're here to say, though, that your friend-wonderful, potato-chip-consuming guy that he is-does not prevent you from using free clipart as a viable design tool. Something to remember is to never use artwork unless you know it is in the public domain. Many popular images such as cartoon characters, logos, comic book characters, pictures of movie stars and signers are copyrighted.
